History

We are proud to have owned and operated the Barker Tavern for almost three decades. The Barker is a casual fine dining restaurant, neighborhood pub and elegant function facility framed in a treasured historical setting. Two generations of the Jordan family has worked here welcoming thousands of guests over the years.
One of the most noteworthy seventeen century homes in America, the Williams-Barker house is said to be the second oldest standing house in the United States. In
this historic building, the heavy beams and wooden walls, once
pierced for portholes, bear witness to its use as a garrison
in the year 1676. John Williams, the builder of the house, moved to Scituate with Mr. Hatherly from London. That he was of the same family of Oliver Cromwell is a tradition in the town.
Upon the death of John Williams, his son Captain John Williams inherited the house and farm of some two hundred acres. He was the captain of the military company that pursued King Philip to Mount Hope and commanded the right wing of the ambuscade when the chief was killed. The courageous captain died in 1694 and his gravestone, the oldest one in the Scituate burial ground, can still be seen.
Today, crackling fires, rustic yet
elegant decor and beautifully appointed tables embrace each
guest like an old friend.

Eli Jordan purchased the Barker Tavern in 1978, he knew
exactly what he wanted to bring to his customers; a memorable
dining experience. Here in this quaint New England fishing village we have enjoyed practicing our own greek hospitality, whether serving 200 guests at a spectacular wedding
reception, or the romantic couple celebrating their 30th
wedding anniversary, each person is treated with special
care. We treat our guests and employees alike, as family. We will have it no other way.
